Never has the conflicts behind Leonard Bernstein’s, Jerome Robbins’ and Stephen Sondheim’s groundbreaking musical West Side Story been more relevant than it is today in Santa Maria, California.  Our students deal with gang violence, rivalries, forbidden love, racism, and the challenges of being an immigrant in our country every day. This is the reason the drama departments at all three of our comprehensive high schools decided to join forces and take a stand against what they see as important issues facing young people today.

Our production which features PVHS Sophomore, Odessa Laurie, as the young immigrant Maria who falls in love with the “American” Tony, Righetti High School senior Jorge Arturo Perez, along with 45 other cast members look at what it means to hate someone for no reason and the consequences that follow.

West Side Story is the modern retelling of Romeo and Juliet set in New York City in 1960 but it could as easily be set in Santa Maria, California 2020. It is considered by many to have the most beautiful musical score ever written for musical theater.  With the combined talents of the singers, dancers, and actors from all three schools staging a production of this beautiful play in our brand new performing arts facility will be one not to be missed.

This musical is appropriate for children over 5 and seating is limited. Plan to purchase tickets in advance and arrive early for performance.
